This weekend I spent most of my time relaxing in the kitchen.
It's my one of my favourite places. My stepson called it Saturday Kitchen and I think that is the perfect name for a productive day spent cooking and experimenting.
We just harvested the apples from our tree and decided to do several different things this year rather than baking lots of apple pies (although that is on the agenda too).
I decided to make apple chips for the winter to have on cereal, porridge etc.
I peeled them (as the skins didn't look blemish free), sliced them and placed them in the dehydrater for 8 hours at 60 degrees Celsius. If you don't have a dehydrater, you can do the same thing in the oven too on baking trays.
They look good and taste yummy. I'm not sure how long they will last though.
I'm also planning to freeze some partially cooked pie filling, with sugar and cinnamon ready for some winter apple pies.
I will also add them to some savoury dishes too, like coleslaw and chimichangas (a favourite dish discovered when cooking new recipes with a friend for a shared dinner).
I made a banana loaf with leftover very ripe bananas and added walnuts for a yummy flavour and texture. This is great sliced and served with lashings of butter of your choosing.
Lastly, I made a big pot of homemade vegetable soup (which didn't last long). Soup (any kind) is my hubby's favourite go to dish.
The weekend passed very quickly, but was fun me, my hubby and our tummys 😊
Hope you all had a good weekend too!
Homemade soup, nice and thick! As we say in Scotland... 'that'll stick the yer ribs'
