One of the things we realised when we moved home was how important it was to be surrounded by friends and family.
When we moved, we were thrilled to see family and friends, but we missed our kiwi friends and family too. For 12 years, we had met some truly beautiful people who became close friends, from our colleague in the South Island (we lived in the north), our friends close by, our NZ Mum (who went above and beyond, looking after us when we first arrived and still keeps in touch now) to a wonderful adventurous couple from Argentina.
When we were discussing how important it was to us to be with friends and family now we were back home, one of our best friends suggested we introduce a monthly games night to ensure that we all made time, no matter what was going on in our lives, to come together, eat, drink and have fun together.
We have been doing this now, every month, for almost a year. Each month one of our little group becomes host, we cook good food, play a game (which always results in hysterical laughter) catch up on everything we have been up to, and for me, it’s time very well spent.
We have now played lots of games together, from board games, to Pictionary, prize bingo (with my hubby calling out all the wrong numbers (‘7 and 4……. 11, no no, not 74, I meant 11’) boy that drove us all nuts 😂 to making things out of play dough against each other for points and of course, bragging rights!
I love spending time with people who make me smile, who just ‘get me’ and genuinely care about both my husband and I.
My circle of friends and family may be small, but I know I can count on them if I ever need anything.
Life can be hard at times for us all and being with friends and family is definitely something we should all set aside time for.
I highly recommend hosting games nights with your nearest and dearest to lift your spirits and soothe your soul.
